Electronic Steering Lock (ESL/ELV) Repair

The Electronic Steering Lock (ESL/ELV) is anti-theft that locks the steering wheel. When the key passes the auto-verification process after it is inserted, the lock is released and the user can start the car. Common faults that suggest the ESL is beginning to fail or has failed are listed below.

1) Key turns on ignition but the lights on the instrument cluster don't appear

2) Steering lock is in the off position when there is no key in ignition

3) Key needs to be turned to ignition multiple times before lights appear on instrument cluster

4) Steering wheel remains locked when key inserted in ignition
